1st Paragraph : Tell why you are writing; name the position, field, or general career area about which you are asking. Tell how you heard of the opening or organization.
2nd Paragraph : Mention one or two of your qualifications you think would be of greatest interest to the organization, slanting your remarks to their point of view. Tell why you are particularly interested in the employer, location, or type of work. If you have had related experience or specialized training, be sure to point it out. Refer the reader to the enclosed application form, resume or the fact that the XYZ Career Placement Office has or will send full credentials to provide additional information concerning your background and interests.
3rd Paragraph : Close by making a request for an opportunity to visit the employer. Indicate that you will follow up with a phone call about the possibility of a meeting. If, instead of wanting an interview, your request is for further information concerning the opening, it would be polite to enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Make sure your closing is not vague, but makes a specific action from the reader likely. Sincerely,

1st Paragraph- Your opening paragraph should pique the interest of the potential employer. Tell why you are writing. Name the position, field or general vocational area about which you are asking. Tell how you learned of the opening or organization and why you are interested in the organization. Refer back to the previous page’s suggestions.
2nd Paragraph-This paragraph should create a desire to read further. Provide additional information concerning your education, experience, qualities, and interests as they relate to the position. Describe one or two qualifications you think would be of the greatest interest to the employer, keeping in mind the employer’s point of view. If you have related experience or special training, be sure to point it out. Tell the employer specifically what you have to offer the organization and support your claim with proof/examples.
3rd Paragraph- In your closing paragraph ask for action. Refer to the three standard ways to close your cover letter on the previous page. Be sure to emphasize your appreciation for their time.

Start your letter with a grabber—a statement that establishes a connection with your reader, a probing question, or a quotable quote. Briefly say what job you are applying for.
The mid-section of your letter should be one or two short paragraphs that make relevant points about your qualifications. You should not summarize your resume! You may incorporate a column or bullet point format here.
Your last paragraph should initiate action by explaining what you will do next (e.g., call the employer) or instigate the reader to contact you to set up an interview. Close by saying “thank you.”
